Minions is getting a sequel

What was meant to be a cheap gag in Despicable Me is becoming a full blown pop culture phenomenon. Universal and Illumination this week revealed Minions, those little yellow memory foam creatures who speak gibberish, are getting yet another feature length film—the first came out in 2015 and received mostly mixed reviews.

Although their charm is best consumed in small doses, Illumination apparently feels another story needs to be told, because why not? In the first movie, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob went out in search of an evil master to serve, finally settling upon Gru, who is the star of Despicable Me.

Minions became the breakout star of Despicable Me, which was released all the way back in 2010. Since then, they’ve become a phenomenon unto themselves.

That doesn’t mean a sequel is necessary

Although Minions are great, their spinoff was a mixed bag. It felt like a short movie that went on for far too long, though it did have its moments.

We’ll get a fresh look at the Minions when Illumination releases Despicable Me 3 on June 30, followed by a Minions sequel, which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2020.
